Overview
The sound was electro, but bouncy, prone to wailing guitar solo’s and with a much more traditional, ordered rock rhythm. The band, fronted by Sarah’s airy, soft vocals, was difficult to categorise, but for me it followed a path, a process. DS Lane suited that well, but it was only a starting point – many of the letterforms are awkward, some too long, others too whimsical. Working with only lower-case type it was necessary to tighten and fatten the letters and remake some to produce a more comfortable balance.
In its first iteration the logotype was used with scratched, roughened William Morris prints in dirty neon’s against muted blues, greens and naturals to produce a disco lounge or snug feel. Later the repeating imagery was dropped for a series of illustrations by my friend Andrew over the pond. It was always my wish to keep all text off of the cover of the Transmission album and let the illustrations do the talking, but alas in the end the name of the album at least had to be on there, and it is, relatively hidden through the middle of the illustration.
